Called “Good Shepherd 101,” these sessions provide information about our church for all newcomers, prospective members, any who are interested in being confirmed in the Episcopal Church, and ANY ONE interested in learning MORE about the church. This week’s class will be the last in this series. GS 101 will be offered again early in 2009.
FIREWORKS

Presented By Riverside Fine Arts Association
Friday, November 14, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Hailed as “the hottest classical band in New York,” Fireworks redefines the chamber music experience for a new generation of listeners. Founded with the goal of creating a single, small ensemble capable of representing the full scope of today’s musical diversity, Fireworks combines the talents of classically-trained but musically omnivorous young virtuosi who pride themselves on being able to play just about anything, regardless of style, time period, or instrumentation. Drawing on a vast musical palette, along with the creative vision and arranging skills of its director, Brian Coughlin, Fireworks develops innovative, eclectic programs which are both carefully unified and yet defy classification. Fireworks embraces eclecticism not for its own sake but in order to spotlight works it believes deserve wider recognition as vital, living art, regardless of style. The ensemble's thrilling performances and contagious enthusiasm for the music of our time continue to attract critical acclaim and large, diverse, and enthusiastic audiences wherever the ensemble performs.

WHAT GOOD SHEPHERD MEANS TO ME By Jeanne Moomaw

When Allan asked me to speak on what Good Shepherd means to me, I got a little teary—even before he finished asking —- because Good Shepherd means so much to me. This Church and each of you mean more to me than any words could ever say.

David and I have worshiped here for over 50 years. This is the place of our family history:

  • Our 3 daughters were baptized here.
  • 2 were married here bringing us 2 greatly loved sons-in-law.
  • 5 grandchildren were all baptized here.
  • 1 God-child was married here recently
  • and many more dear friends than I want to count have been buried from here.
Our closest and dearest friends are here—wonderful life long friends.

We’ve had a lot of fun here—

  • Remember May Fetes,
  • Fall Bazaars and the Canning Kitchen.
  • Operettas by our choir.
  • The Guild of the Christ Child and Easter Egg Hunts
  • Now RFAA and art shows -— Breakfasts and Lunches and
  • Dinners for 8
This is a place of great beauty, a place of outstanding spiritual teaching, a place of glorious music and art. All of us appreciate these qualities.

For me Good Shepherd is a refuge from an increasingly harsh world -— a place where dignity, respect and good sense prevail -— a place where I can worship God and learn about His Son, our Savior, in peace and freedom, a place where I can pray and feel comforted.

Though we are especially blessed in being able to worship in these absolutely gorgeous surroundings, the Church of the Good Shepherd is so much more -— it is the people who are special -— each of us has a place here to use our talents -— to carry out God’s work in the world -— you are the treasure of the Good Shepherd and I am honored to be among you. This is quite literally where I find my strength and my Redeemer.

The question now remains, what does Good Shepherd mean to you and how do we share our responsibilities in continuing these blessings?
