THANKSGIVING

The Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist Service will be held on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday November 25th, at 7:30 p.m.

Let's Make Thanksgiving last all year.....

Once again the Outreach Committee asks that we pledge to help keep the pantries at St. Mary's and St. Catherine's stocked throughout the entire year.

But especially for the next weeks the parish is encouraged to bring items that may be given to the pantries for a Thanksgiving Day meal.

Those items include:
    Canned hams
    Potatoes
    Stove Top stuffing
    Cranberries
    Gravy packets
    Rice
    Dinner rolls
    Canned Vegetables
    Mac'N Cheese

Gift Cards for Winn-Dixie, Publix or Target and cash donations are welcomed! But it is so simple to add the needed items to ourpersonal shopping trips to the grocery store. Don't forget the "buy one, get one free" sales.

Items needed on a weekly basis throughout the year include (but are not limited to) the following:
·        Canned vegetables and fruits
·        Boxed meals (i.e. Mac 'N Cheese...)
·        Peanut Butter
·        Canned meats
·        Soups
·        Rice and pasta
·        Crackers
·        Boxed Cereals

Bishop's Visitation to Good Shepherd

On December 13^th, Bishop Keyser will be with us as celebrant and preacher. In addition, this will be a time of confirmations for those who have completed the GS 101 course and who desire to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church, and also an opportunity for any baptized Episcopalians to renew their baptismal vows if they so desire. As this will be the second Sunday in December, there will be a potluck luncheon following the 10:00 am worship and anyone who would be willing to help with the setup and decorating for this is encouraged to contact the parish office as soon as possible.

BUILDING OUR YOUTH GROUP!

What's up for 4th graders and older kids this fall?

"First Friday Fun" is where we all get together for fun monthly activities the first Friday of each month. First Friday Night Fun will continue through-out the fall. Please call Margo @ 389-1467 for more info.

Sunday Morning "Breakfast Club" is on Sundays at 9:30 in the upstairs of Worsham Hall. The curriculumis centered on learning how we worship - using the Book of Common Prayer, The Hymnal and other tools. Bible study will include - how to use the Bible, the readings for the day, and using tools such as the Bible Dictionary and Concordance. The work will be self-paced so that a child can arrive anytime between 9:30 and the end of the sermon and stay through the entire time or leave to prepare for choir or to acolyte. Of course, as the class name implies, there will be a light breakfast at 9:30. Deacon Linda will be teaching the class and she is looking for others who would like to join her in the adventure...do you know how to use a Concordance?

GOOD SHEPHERD 101

Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. GS 101 is a six-session informational series for all newcomers, prospective members, those interested in being confirmed in the Episcopal Church, and anyone who would just like to learn more about The Episcopal Church in general and Good Shepherd in particular. If you would like to participate, call the church office.

St. Nicholas and St. Cecelia Choirs

The St Nicholas (ages 5-7) and St. Cecilia (ages 8-12) Choirs rehearsals are on Wednesdays, at 5:30. Any and all children interested in giving singing a try are welcome to attend. They sing monthly during worship service.

Participants will make a clergy or deacon stole. The quilt design for stole will be a four patch on point with triangle sides. 100% cotton fabric is best. Trace patterns and cut fabric Friday afternoon. Sew and finish on Saturday.

New Beginnings Retreat -
November 13-15, 2009
New Beginnings is a unique experience designed specifically to respond to the needs and concerns of Junior High Youth in grades 6-9. Its purpose is to help young people grow in their love of themselves, others and the Lord Jesus Christ. The weekend begins Friday evening when participants arrive at 7PM and continues until Sunday afternoon at 3 PM. There are
a series of talks by youth and adults, films, tapes, skits, songs and small group discussions and activities. These presentations focus on subjects such as self, friends, parents, siblings, school, God's Love, Prayer, the Church and "Who is Jesus?" There is also lots of time for laughing, creating, and sharing. Participants not only learn and grow, but have a wonderful time. Clergy are present to assist with Spiritual Direction.
Agility Skills & More Seminar -
December 3-6, 2009 Thursday afternoon- Sunday afternoon
Do you have a young dog who needs skill refinement or more skills work? This three day seminar will be limited to 20 youngsters! There will be two groups. A Choral Evensong

A service of Choral Evensong will be held on All Saints Day, November 1st at 6:00 pm, with music by Baynon, T. V.StanFord, Baiton and William Smith of Durham.

Evening Prayer is a liturgy in use in the Anglican Communion and celebrated in the late afternoon or evening. The feast of All Saints is a holy day of the Church honoring all saints, known and unknown. It is held, not only to remember individual saints, but also to remember all those who have died.

Choral evensong, when celebrated in observance of All Saints Day is a meditative and poetic way to commemorate the departed.

A wine and cheese reception will follow in Craig Hall.

THANKSGIVING

Let's Make Thanksgiving last all year.....

Once again the Outreach Committee asks that we pledge to help keep the pantries at St. Mary's and St. Catherine's stocked throughout the entire year.

But especially for the next weeks the parish is encouraged to bring items that may be given to the pantries for a Thanksgiving Day meal.

Those items include:
Canned hams
Potatoes
Stove Top stuffing
Cranberries
Gravy packets
Rice
Dinner rolls
Canned Vegetables
Mac'N Cheese

Gift Cards for Winn-Dixie, Publix or Target and cash donations are welcomed! But it is so simple to add the needed items to ourpersonal shopping trips to the grocery store. Don't forget the "buy one, get one free" sales.

Items needed on a weekly basis throughout the year include (but are not limited to) the following:

Fall UTO Ingathering

Fall UTO Ingathering - The Fall United Thank Offering Ingathering is held on or about the first Sunday in November. This year it falls on November 1st, All Saints Day. What a great way to remember with thankful hearts all the Saints we have known!

You are invited to "count your blessings," - those coins you have put in your Blue Box in thanksgiving for large and small daily gifts from God that brighten your life and the lives of those around you. Bring your coins or a check to your church so that your offering can be joined with the thank offerings of other thankful people.

The power of the Blue Box is unlimited. Your prayers and offerings have built churches and schools, made needed renovations, fed the hungry, clothed the poor, provided shelter for the homeless and have provided care and support for those with physical, mental and emotional challenges.

If you do not have a Blue Box, or would like to know more about the United Thank Offering, please ask Linda Ross. We need you! Regular, intentional thanksgiving can make a difference in your life as well as in the lives of those who receive your offering.

Patchwork Stole Workshop -

December 4-5, 2009 Friday check-in 4:00 pm; Saturday until 4:00 pm

Participants will make a clergy or deacon stole. The quilt design for stole will be a four patch on point with triangle sides. 100% cotton fabric is best. Trace patterns and cut fabric Friday afternoon. Sew and finish on Saturday.

New Beginnings Retreat -

November 13-15, 2009

New Beginnings is a unique experience designed specifically to respond to the needs and concerns of Junior High Youth in grades 6-9. Its purpose is to help young people grow in their love of themselves, others and the Lord Jesus Christ. The weekend begins Friday evening when participants arrive at 7PM and continues until Sunday afternoon at 3 PM. There are

a series of talks by youth and adults, films, tapes, skits, songs and small group discussions and activities. These presentations focus on subjects such as self, friends, parents, siblings, school, God's Love, Prayer, the Church and "Who is Jesus?" There is also lots of time for laughing, creating, and sharing. Participants not only learn and grow, but have a wonderful time. Clergy are present to assist with Spiritual Direction.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL

No Godly Play during the summer months. Children are invited to take an activity bag from the narthex to use during service. Parents are encouraged to help their children follow the liturgy either with the laminated service cards, the Book of Common Prayer or the Hymnal. Summer is a great time to model how we worship.

A reminder that the nursery is available during the 10:00 an service for infants and toddlers. Children 4 years old and above should not be taken to the nursery. CHOIR SUMMER SCHEDULE

During the summer the choir will have its summer rehearsal schedule, meeting the first Wednesday of July (1st), and August (5th) at the regular 7 pm hour. Regular rehearsals will resume August 19th.

There will be a week-long children's choir training camp for the St. Cecilia and St. Nicholas choirs the week of August 10th here, at Good Shepherd. Any child not currently singing with either of the groups but that is interested in doing so is encouraged to attend. Parents of interested children should contact Shannon Gallier in the music office at 387-5691, ext. 11.

The hurricane/storm season has now arrived and, while each parish may or may not have a disaster plan, it is also important that each family have a plan.

The State of Florida has developed a template for just that situation.

The Family Disaster Planning website, brought to you by the State of Florida will better prepare you and your family for future disasters by helping you create your own personalized Family Disaster Plan. The web site is: www.floridadisaster.org/family.

In a major disaster, emergency workers may not be able to reach everyone right away, and in some cases it may take 3 or more days for help to arrive. What would you do if you had no electricity, no gas, no water and no telephone service? Having a plan for your family and their needs will help ensure their safety and comfort during these difficult times.

The plan will only take at few minutes. You will be asked to provide information about your home, family, and pets. Using the information you provide, this website will create a personalized Family Disaster Plan that you can print out and save for future emergencies. Included in your plan will be:
Recommended amounts of food and water based on your family information.
Contact information for your local emergency responders and maps of your local Evacuation Zones.
Checklists of important steps to take before, during, and after a disaster!
Remember, the best way to make your family and home safer is to be prepared before a disaster happens.

Vestry Minutes - March 27, 2009

Those present: Stan Bullock, Bronson Lamb, Keith Sands, Shep Colledge, John Zell, Nick Humphress, Charlotte Lewis, Ken Pitts, Susan Merrett, Matt Wolfe (Absent: Rupert Bliss)

Fr. Doug opened the meeting with prayer at 7:20 PM.

Susan Merrett was unanimously elected as the new clerk of the vestry.

Minutes were approved with the following amendments: Matt Wolfe was present at the February meeting (Colledge/Zell)

Weekly Shepherds Staff will include synopsis of vestry minutes after approval of vestry. Complete minutes will be available online and will be so stated in the bulletin.

Charlotte and Keith will add new email addresses to the mailing list.

Fr. Doug's report included the following:
W.A.T.S. event was a huge success. There were a lot of volunteers, positive feedback from parishioners and the surrounding community.

The $25,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation in honor of The Rev. Arthur Stanley Bullock has been received, with the monies to be used for a plaque in the church, in recognition of Fr. Bullock's work for the stain glass window over the Great West Doors, and the completion of the renovations to Worsham Hall. A report to the foundation concerning the use of the money will be required.

The Holy Week offerings are as follows:

The Junior Warden, Nick Humphress reported that:
The picture hanging system has been installed in Craig Hall

One half of the overhanging tree in the courtyard will be cut

He will re-hang the permanent flower board with a schedule on it

The lower pin hole in the door opening from the hall to the courtyard is temporarily fixed, and a permanent solution is pending

Bob Cole of Florida Sound Systems is preparing an estimate to improve the sound system
Stan Bullock gave the treasurer report to include the following:
The diocesan pledge has been reduced, the current balance includes only our 2009 pledge. The church is currently 2 payments in arrears Stanley Bullock gave an update on the swimming pool. The Pillars Trust dispersed the remainder ($10,500.) of the trust for current pool related expenses. The restoration account may cover some upcoming repairs. In addition, the patrons are moving forward on some cosmetic issues and additional work will have to be completed in the near future. Adjustments to the boiler have been made and should reveal a more consistent water temperature. Periodic adjustments and maintenance to the boiler are needed, but will be tabled pending more permanent solutions to the pool. Stanley and Shep will continue to work with pool patrons and interested parties for a sustainable solution to the pool issues.
Shep Colledge reported that there has been no response from Trane following the letter sent by our attorney Lep Adams. He recommended moving forth with arbitration and using restoration funds to pay the $1,250 filing fee, due to the time issues involved and their lack of response. The motion was passed unanimously.

Charlotte Lewis requested that the treasurers report be published. After discussion, it was decided that a synopsis of the report will accompany quarterly statements as they are mailed.

Motion to adjourn was made and approved.

Vestry Minutes - February 23, 2009

Those present: Stan Bullock, Nick Humphress, Shep Colledge, Charlotte Lewis, Keith Sands, John Zell, Randy Stephens, Rupert Bliss, Brian Mills, Bronson Lamb, Susan Merrett, Doug Hodsdon ( no absent members)

Fr. Doug opened the meeting with prayer at 6:05 PM.

Agenda adopted as presented. (Colledge/Humphress)

Minutes for the January meeting were approved as presented. (Sand/Merrett))

Fr. Doug announced his appointment of Shep Colledge as Senior Warden and thanked Stan Bullock for his service during the past three years.

Shep Colledge nominated Nick Humpress to continue as Junior Warden. Seconded by Rupert Bliss and passed by unanimous vote.

Stan Bullock was nominated by the Senior Warden as the new treasurer. Seconded by Nick Humpress and passed by unanimous vote.

The election of a new Clerk of the Vestry was tabled until the March meeting.

Fr. Doug's report included the following:
Bishop Keyser will make a visitation on December 13, 2009. Fr. Doug will continue the Good Shepherd 101 in preparation for confirmations at that time. The next session of GS101 reconvenes during Lent.
Baptisms are scheduled for March 8 and for the Easter Vigil.
The first WATS (We Are the Sermon) is scheduled for Sunday, March 15. Betty Malone will be the recipient. In the event of inclement weather, the work group will be divided between Betty's house and the Good Shepherd Pool.
The concert, Lift Every Voice, celebrating Black History Month and featuring local high school choruses was a great success. The nave was filled with visitors. The director has asked to return on January 31, 2010.
Fr. Doug has agreed to host and participate in the Lee High School baccalaureate on June 1, 2009. Approximately 150 seniors and their families are expected to attend.
"The Voice" was mailed with the announcement that Shannon Gallier has been hired as the Organist/Choirmaster. His first Sunday will be May 31, the Day of Pentecost.
The new hanging system for RFAA artwork in Craig Hall is due to be installed February 24.
The neighborhood picnic to be sponsored by the Outreach Committee, the Fellowship Committee, and the Vestry is on the calendar for April 25.
Initial discussion has taken place concerning the development of a youth program for the children who are actively involved in the parish and will soon be of age for a youth program.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper hosted by Rupert and Company will take place on February 24 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.
The annual CEW spaghetti supper is Thursday, February 26 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.
Ash Wednesday services are scheduled for 12:10 PM and 7:30 PM.
Deacon Linda reported that although Teen MOPS will not be meeting regularly on Thursdays, the parish remains committed to supporting the ministry to teen mothers. The committee will plan a special event to take place during the neighborhood picnic. She thanked everyone who participated in the Safe Church workshop on Saturday, February 21. The next offering will be in May. Dcn Linda also announced the Lenten Outreach project adopted by the Outreach Committee will be the Episcopal Relief and Development "Gifts for Life" project. The committee will present the children with "mite pigs" to collect coins to purchase pigs for families in third world countries. The parish will be encouraged to participate by saving coins to fill a large piggy bank.

Shep Colledge as the newly appointed Senior Warden expressed his excitement for the future of Good Shepherd. He announced that the Vestry will have an overnight retreat at Camp Weed in March. The members of the vestry need to call the church office to make their preference of dates known - either March 13 - 14 or March 27-28.

Junior Warden's report included the following:
He and Paul Arrington, Chair of the Outreach Committee, visited Betty Malone's home to identify tasks for WATS on March 15.
Buildings and Grounds met and prioritized tasks on the church campus that need attention
No update on the issues with Trane
Randy Stephens requested that the B&G re-hang the flower board that is currently stored in the Archive Room. Nick will follow up on her request.

Stan Bullock gave an overview of the current financials. The liabilities are down after the full payment of the Diocesan Pledge. The present balance in the checking account is $9000 with monies to be deposited. Payroll is due to come out of the account this week.

Stan presented new banking resolutions. After discussion the following was approved:
The first resolution concerning check signing abilities was changed to reflect that the rector (Fr. Doug Hodsdon), the Senior Warden (Shep Colledge), the Treasurer (Stan Bullock) and the Parish Administrator (Alina Martinez) may sign all checks issued by the Church on its accounts. (Bullock/Stevens)
The second resolution gave the capacity to transfer funds in the GMA (cash management account) and the Rector's Supplemental Fund to the Senior Warden (Shep Colledge), the Treasurer (Stan Bullock) and the Rector (Fr. Doug Hodsdon). (Bullock/Wolfe)
The third resolution allows the Rector (Fr. Doug Hodsdon), the Senior Warden (Shep Colledge) and the Treasurer (Stan Bullock) to sign any necessary documents concerning the line of credit with First Guaranty Bank & Trust.

Stan Bullock, Shep Colledge and Fr. Doug reported on their meeting with the Good Shepherd pool patrons. After conversations concerning the financial challenges of maintaining the pool, the patrons asked for time to develop a plan to find monies to keep the pool operating. The cost of operating the pool in 2008 was $90,000 while the income was $35,000. The church representatives agreed to give the patrons 90 days to present a plan.

Charlotte Lewis called for discussion to ensure that the spending for Christmas and Easter flowers would not exceed the donated amounts of monies for each occasion. Discussion resolved that Kathy Brown as the new coordinator for the Easter and Christmas flowers will be given up-to-date reports from the Treasurer on the monies allocated for the flowers.

Brian Mills announced that he and his family would be moving to Cleveland, Ohio due to his wife's new job. He therefore tended with regret his resignation as a Vestry Member. His resignation was accepted with thanks and prayer for their future in Ohio.

Next meeting will be announced after the dates are settled for the Vestry Retreat.

Garden Guild Annual Spring Clean-up

Come join the Garden Guild in Lenten service.

The annual courtyard spring clean-up is scheduled for Saturday April 11th 8:00 am - 12:00 noon.

The courtyard will be our focus on the 11th. Bring your rakes, limb saws, chain saws, blowers, pressure washers, shovels, hand tools, gloves etc.

If you don't have any tools, come anyway. Many hands makes work light as they say.

For the Congregations of the Episcopal Church

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

For almost a century, the Good Friday Offering has been a source of support, love and hope for the people of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. This year's 87th Good Friday Offering offers us the opportunity to be nourished by a deepened bond with the churches in the region that is so central to our faith. In my time as Presiding Bishop, I have been deeply moved by their stories of the pain that division brings to the lives of all in this Province of the Anglican Communion.

The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East was formed in 1841 with the purpose of forging friendships with the ancient churches and serving the expatriate communities in this area. The friendships made then have strengthened the work and witness of the entire Episcopal Church ever since. Since 1922, members of the Episcopal Church have given thanks for this extraordinary relationship through their generous giving to the Good Friday Offering. This offering expresses our own commitment to walk with the church of Jerusalem & the Middle East as they continue to work toward justice, reconciliation, and peace. Through our support of these churches we are helping to realize God's visionof shalom.

John Williams was born in Melbourne, Australia, where he was taught the guitar by his father. Later he attended summer courses with Segovia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and studied music at the Royal College of Music in London. He has lived in London since 1952.

One of the most versatile and respected guitarists in the world, John Williams has explored, expanded and personally inspired a modern renaissance for the classical guitar through his international concert appearances and best-selling recordings. When he made his first appearances in the United States some forty years ago, Williams signed an exclusive contract with CBS Masterworks, which is now Sony Classical.

WATS - "We Are The Sermon"

Yesterday, Sunday, March 15th, we gathered after the 10:00 a.m. service at Betty Malone's home, to express a small token of our thanks to her for all that she has done for us at Good Shepherd through all the many years. We spruced up her home both inside and out.

Garden Guild Annual Spring Clean-up

Come join the Garden Guild in Lenten service.

The annual grounds spring clean-up is scheduled for Saturday April 4th 8:00 am - 12:00 noon.

The grounds around the out side of the church will be our focus. Bring your rakes, limb saws, chain saws, blowers, pressure washers, shovels, hand tools, gloves etc.

If you don't have any tools, come anyway. Many hands makes work light as they say.

New Beginnings is coming back to our diocese. NB #1 * is a 3 day retreat from Friday until Sunday for 6-9 graders at Camp Weed. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

For almost a century, the Good Friday Offering has been a source of support, love and hope for the people of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. This year's 87th Good Friday Offering offers us the opportunity to be nourished by a deepened bond with the churches in the region that is so central to our faith. In my time as Presiding Bishop, I have been deeply moved by their stories of the pain that division brings to the lives of all in this Province of the Anglican Communion.

The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East was formed in 1841 with the purpose of forging friendships with the ancient churches and serving the expatriate communities in this area. The friendships made then have strengthened the work and witness of the entire Episcopal Church ever since. Since 1922, members of the Episcopal Church have given thanks for this extraordinary relationship through their generous giving to the Good Friday Offering. This offering expresses our own commitment to walk with the church of Jerusalem & the Middle East as they continue to work toward justice, reconciliation, and peace. Through our support of these churches we are helping to realize God's visionof shalom.

Again, please join with me in celebrating the work of the Good Friday Offering by generously sharing the gifts we have been given with our sisters and brothers in the Middle East. I remain

If you intend to work outdoors, please wear shoes suitable for working in a garden.

You are invited to come and hear these talented young people from Geneva College present choral renditions that will be a tremendous spiritual blessing.

This concert is presented with no admission fee. A free-will offering will be received to defray expenses.

The Genevans Choir is an a cappella choir of Geneva College, in Beaver Falls, PA. The 50-member choir is on tour of the Southeastern United States, and has been a ministry of the college since 1938. The concert will include motets from Victoria's "Lamentations of Jeremiah" and "Super flumina Babylonis" of Palestrina, as well as music by two composers with special anniversaries this year: Felix Mendelssohn (b. 1809) and Henry Purcell (b. 1659). Further variety will be added by performances of The Grace Notes and Eight Bells, small ensembles of women and men respectively. The Genevans are directed by Dr. Robert M. Copeland.

It is Diocesan policy for Eucharistic Visitors to attend a Continuing Education class every three years in order for licenses to be renewed. EV Continuing Ed will be offered by DCCL each Spring. (Training for new Eucharistic Visitors is offered by DCCL each Fall. Parish priests are required to sign off on registration forms.)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

For almost a century, the Good Friday Offering has been a source of support, love and hope for the people of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. This year's 87th Good Friday Offering offers us the opportunity to be nourished by a deepened bond with the churches in the region that is so central to our faith. In my time as Presiding Bishop, I have been deeply moved by their stories of the pain that division brings to the lives of all in this Province of the Anglican Communion.

The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East was formed in 1841 with the purpose of forging friendships with the ancient churches and serving the expatriate communities in this area. The friendships made then have strengthened the work and witness of the entire Episcopal Church ever since. Since 1922, members of the Episcopal Church have given thanks for this extraordinary relationship through their generous giving to the Good Friday Offering. This offering expresses our own commitment to walk with the church of Jerusalem & the Middle East as they continue to work toward justice, reconciliation, and peace. Through our support of these churches we are helping to realize God's visionof shalom.

Again, please join with me in celebrating the work of the Good Friday Offering by generously sharing the gifts we have been given with our sisters and brothers in the Middle East. I remain

ALTAR FLOWERS

CYPRESS STRING QUARTET

Singled out by Chamber Music Magazine as, "A Generation X ensemble to watch," the Cypress String Quartet is reaching out in new ways to ignite interest in chamber music. Since its inception in 1996, the Cypress String Quartet has built a respected body of new music, commissioning and premiering over 25 works from many of America's leading composers. To commemorate Felix Mendelssohn's 200th birthday in 2009, the Cypress and the Library of Congress have co-commissioned a new quartet from brilliant young American composer Kevin Puts. Paired with Mendelssohn and Beethoven quartets, Mr. Puts' new work will premiere in February 2009 in Washington DC as part of the "Mendelssohn on the Mall" project in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Museum. Other recent Cypress commissions have come from 2005 Grawemeyer Award winning composer George Tsontakis, and Grammy nominees Benjamin Lees and Jennifer Higdon. Four original Cypress commissions are listed on Chamber Music America's list of "101 Great American Ensemble Works.

BreakOut!

BreakOut! is a 24 hour retreat for 4-6 graders at Camp Weed. The next weekend is March 7 & 8, 2009 and begins at 3 p.m. The cost is $55 and it's a great introduction to youth ministry in an overnight experience at Camp Weed. New Beginnings

New Beginnings is coming back to our diocese. NB #1 * is a 3 day retreat from Friday until Sunday for 6-9 graders at Camp Weed. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

The Annual Meeting of the congregation of Good Shepherd will be held on Sunday, February 8th following the service at 9:00. (Reminder: there is only one service that Sunday).

The purpose of the meeting is to report on the Annual Convention of the Diocese, on the work of the church since the last annual parish meeting, to elect members of the vestry and delegates and alternates to the Diocesan Convention/Convocational Council and to conduct such other business as may be brought before it.

I have been a member of Good Shepherd since 1997. I have served on Buildings & Grounds. I am currently on Hospitality and Fellowship Committees, also on the kitchen crew (last Sunday breakfast).

I am a co-starter of Pot Luck (2nd Sunday lunch); I think this is a great time for members to come together for fellowship.

A willingness to serve when called upon is what I have tried to do. Good Shepherd is my home church. I hope others will feel the same way.

Member of Good Shepherd since 1984, when I moved to Jacksonville. Raised two of my three children at the Church. Taught Sunday School for about 15 years, Kindergarten and then Third Grade. Served on the vestry in the 1990s under Jim Dannals. Presently, I am head of the Altar Guild. Have always enjoyed being a part of the Good Shepherd Family.
Matt Wolfe
I have been attending the Church of the Good Shepherd regularly since 2004, and was received into Good Shepherd in 2006. Previously, I had attended Good Shepherd on occasion for marriages, funerals and special services with my partner, Tripp Newsom, who has been a member of Good Shepherd since childhood. I was drawn to the warmth and openness of Good Shepherd. The church has always felt like a very natural fit for me. I have been active as an usher and as a lay reader.

I consider Good Shepherds greatest attributes to be: (1) the location and beauty of the facility, (2) the diversity and warmth of the congregation, (3) the music program, and (4) our outreach to the community through the activities and organizations we sponsor.

In these challenging times, my concerns for Good Shepherd are:

The need to grow the core congregation. I think we should undertake to survey past parishioners and see if we can welcome them back to the Church. Raising the profile of some of the activities we sponsor may also bring more people to our facility.

Our future lies in youth participation. We need to brainstorm to create new ways to reach out to area youth and also to re-engage the children of members who have left the Church through contacting past parishioners. This may include such things as posting our pot-lucks, monthly breakfasts, and outreach activities on bulletin boards at such places as FFCJ, JU, and at the Exchange, Commissary and barracks on the military bases. These are places where young people may be searching for fulfillment.

Improve our facility. Like the Great Lady she is, Good Shepherd is showing her age.
By doing all of these things, we will not only grow the congregation but also realize the funds to support growth and improvement. Growing the congregation means more people can share in the duties and in the rewards of active participation. More people means more money, which means that each of us contributes our share and feels comfortable that the Church has a solid financial base. I am interested in serving on the Vestry because I would like to help continue steering the Church toward a brighter and more vigorous future.
John Zell
John has been attending Good Shepherd since August of 1992. Initially attracted to the building, he discovered the real beauty of the parish in its members. His involvement in the parish has included: Lay Youth Minister, Vestry Member, Junior Warden, Choir Member and Organist/Choirmaster Search Committee Chairman. Professionally, John is Vice President of Donor Services for The Community Foundation in Jacksonville, a not-for-profit organization that helps individuals and families maximize the joy, effectiveness and efficiency of their philanthropic giving. He is single and uncle to two nephews and one niece in New Jersey. John enjoys biking, snorkeling and old house renovation.
In addition the following two proposed additions to the Bylaws of the Church will be presented for a vote;

"Action by Vestry or Committee Without a Meeting. Any action required to be taken at any annual or special meeting of the vestry, or any action which may be taken at a meeting of the vestry or a committee thereof, may be taken without a meeting, without prior notice and without a vote, if a consent setting forth the action so to be taken is approved in writing (including via facsimile or email) by a majority of the members of the vestry or a majority of the members of the committee, as the case may be, is filed in the minutes of the proceedings of the vestry or of the committee."

" Vestry Member Attendance. Any vestry member who fails to attend three consecutive meetings without just cause shall, at the discretion of the Rector and Wardens, be considered to have resigned from the vestry and the vestry shall thereupon select a replacement according to Article III Section 5 herein."

Qualified voters are all baptized persons sixteen (16) years of age or over who regularly attend services at Good Shepherd, are members of the congregation, and who contribute for the funds or expenses of the church and have done so for six months previous to the meeting.

Being performed will be works of celebrated African-American composers: Roland Carter, Duke Ellington, Moses Hogan, Arnold Servier, Richard Smallwood, Royal Stanton, Raymond Wise. ALTAR FLOWERS
The flowers at the Altar this past Sunday were given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for our family by Allan and Fran Wulbern.

If you would like to donate funds for altar flowers, please visit the flower chart in the narthex to schedule your arrangement for a particular Sunday. Donations can be made in memory of or thanksgiving for a loved one, event, etc. The Flower Guild will provide an arrangement with a $75 donation. Note: To ensure that your order will be honored, please contact the Parish Office for flower requests.
From the Hospitality Committee:
Donations of ginger ale, frozen juices, and cookies are always needed for the coffee hour. Items can be dropped off at the church office. Please write "coffee hour" on each bag.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

The Annual Meeting of the congregation of Good Shepherd will be held on Sunday, February 8th following the service at 9:00. (Reminder: there is only one service that Sunday).

The purpose of the meeting is to report on the Annual Convention of the Diocese, on the work of the church since the last annual parish meeting, to elect members of the vestry and delegates and alternates to the Diocesan Convention/Convocational Council and to conduct such other business as may be brought before it.

The nominees for the four (4) vestry positions up for election are:

Qualified voters are all baptized persons sixteen (16) years of age or over who regularly attend services at Good Shepherd, are members of the congregation, and who contribute for the funds or expenses of the church and have done so for six months previous to the meeting.

Absentee ballots will be available to qualified voters in the parish office.Absentee ballots must be completed and delivered to the rector no later than February 1st.

BLOOD DRIVE

The Blood Alliance has asked that we have the mobile unit do a blood drive here at Good Shepherd. (We stopped doing our quarterly drives because we couldn't get enough people to give). Please, if you can commit to give blood on January 11th, tell Dale Taylor so she can advise them if we have enough donors. They desperately need blood, so if you possibly can, please do! Diaper Drive for Needy Families
Emergency Pregnancy Services, a neighborhood non-profit, pro-life crisis center, provides free services to over 3,000 women and children each year. One of their greatest needs are diapers (especially newborn size) and baby bottles. Please consider adding either to your weekly shopping list and bringing them to the collection box in the narthex. Your generosity and help will be greatly appreciated!

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a format for a service celebrating the birth of Jesus. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.

The format was based on an Order drawn up by Edward White Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for Christmas Eve in 1880 in Truro, Cornwall. It has since been adapted and used by churches all over the world

Diaper Drive for Needy Families

Emergency Pregnancy Services, a neighborhood non-profit, pro-life crisis center, provides free services to over 3,000 women and children each year. One of their greatest needs are diapers (especially newborn size) and baby bottles. Please consider adding either to your weekly shopping list and bringing them to the collection box in the narthex. Your generosity and help will be greatly appreciated!

BLOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT ERIN KISTNER

Friday, December 26th - Blood Drive to benefit Erin Kistner. A kidney donor has been found for Erin Kistner. The surgeries will be performed on January 6. Blood donors are desperately needed. At least one hundred units of blood will be needed on reserve. Anyone can donate, regardless of blood type. Blood donations can be made at any Florida Georgia Blood Alliance location. Please specify that the blood be reserved for the Erin Kistner account, #6445. Also, you can donate Friday, December 26th, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Orange Park Town Hall. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 434-9306. ID is required to donate.

Luminaria

Sundown on the 21st of December marks the beginning of RAP’s 24th Annual Luminaria, or Festival of Lights. The oldest and grandest of Jacksonville’s luminaria celebrations, this regional event has become a holiday tradition that helps sustain our sense of community.

Riverside & Avondale residents are proud to continue this tradition, and will be lining our streets with more than 40,000 bagged candles, and hosting numerous other events. Luminaria night events include Christmas musical concerts at the churches and parks, a live Nativity scene, a bike ride, and carriage rides for a truly traditional touring of the Historic District’s candle-lit streets on this special holiday night.

At 6:00 p.m. Good Shepherd will host a concert in the sanctuary, with the choir singing Christmas carols accompanied by our wonderful Skinner organ.

Schedule, information and volunteer sign-up lists are in the narthex.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Casting Call for All Children of Good Shepherd!

The Good Shepherd Christmas Pageant Needs YOU!

Children in grades pre-K through 12 are invited to participate in the annual Christmas Pageant to be held during 5:00 Christmas Eve service.

The next rehearsal is Sundays December 21st, immediately following the 10:00 service, in the sanctuary.

If you have friends who would like to be in our pageant, they are welcome! We aim for a cast of thousands!

Attention junior and senior high kids: There are many reading parts, so we hope that you will join in.

CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGES

The Episcopal Diocese of Florida extends an invitation to all couples who will have been married for 50+ years by the end of 2009 to be part of the 4th Celebration of Marriages of 50 Years or More on Saturday, April 25, 2009 @ St. John’s Cathedral. You may sign-up until December 14, 2008. The sign-up sheet can be found in the narthex.
